National Transportation Week Makes Its New Home in Detroit May 13-19

DETROIT, May 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Detroit, the nucleus of the automotive industry and a major hub of transportation innovation, welcomes National Transportation Week (NTW) to the region, May 13-19, 2007. National Transportation Week offers the opportunity for the transportation community to join together on a national level to demonstrate the importance of transportation to the economy and society.

Beginning this year, Detroit is the new home of NTW, according to the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB), the official host of NTW that spearheaded the effort to secure the event.

"From our automotive history to our world-class international airport, and our high volume of international shipping, rail and trucking opportunities, Detroit is the natural home for this important event," said Larry Alexander, president and CEO of the DMCVB. "We're very impressed by the numbers of organizations that have stepped up to develop programming to support National Transportation Week."
He said the level of forums taking place will help to put the national spotlight on Detroit as the place to hold future transportation-related conventions and meetings.

Leading Business Conferences and Events

One of the focuses for NTW 2007 is alternative energy technology, which several local conferences and events in metro Detroit will highlight. National Transportation Week also will serve as a forum for transportation officials to highlight other key issues.

* Monday, May 14, 10 a.m. - NTW kick-off, NextEnergy 461 Burroughs, Detroit
* Monday, May 14, 10:30 a.m-2 p.m. - The CMI-Schneible Group Presents an Alternative Energy MEDIA ONLY Ride and Drive, NextEnergy, (lunch served). Media will be able to experience more than 20 vehicles by 10 manufacturers including hybrids, electric vehicles, fuel cells and more.
* Tuesday, May 15, 7:30 a.m., NextEnergy - The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau and WWJ Newsradio 950 will host a business breakfast, "Moving Michigan: Advancing Transportation Through Technology." This meeting will spur conversation about the state of the transportation industry and the exciting changes expected in the future. A panel of leading transportation experts and local officials will discuss how technological advancements are reshaping all sectors of the transportation industry as we know it. The panel will detail how Michigan can capitalize on these advancements to improve safety and efficiency, and help create job opportunities and improve our economy.

The event celebrates several transportation milestones being commemorated in 2007. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to visit the automotive attractions at the start and finish of the event. * Monday, May 14, 6:45 a.m. - Detroit * Bikes! To Work Day, along Michigan and Woodward Avenues, sponsored by Detroit Synergy and Transportation Riders United
* Wednesday, May 16, 6 p.m. - Detroit in Transit: Visions of a Region on the Move," a reception honoring top designs showing what Detroit transportation could look like in 2025. Centaur, 2233 Park Ave. Detroit
* Friday, May 18, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Classic Car Cruise at 4 p.m. - Nankin Mills, Hines Drive, Westland. The final NTW event is Wayne County's Transportation Education Expo, featuring exhibits from students at Michigan schools and universities ranging from a plug-in hybrid automobile, to an electric car and the latest in technological advances

According to the Federal Highway Administration, the transportation sector accounts for more than 11.7 million jobs and contributes more than $1 trillion annually to the U.S. economy. Americans travel almost five trillion miles a year and the transportation network carries more than 12 billion tons of freight every year.

The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud to host NTW 2007 in Detroit.
